The 2026 Subaru Outback is all-new for this model year. It comes with familiar 4-cylinder engine options, tall ground clearance, and standard Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. The exterior and interior updates are refreshing, yet the Outback retains many features owners love. Here are our three favorite things.
1. Rugged Body Style
The Outback’s boxy new design makes it look like it is standing proud and tall, which it is. The redesigned Outback is 1.4 inches taller than the outgoing model, maximizing headroom for passengers, especially those in the back seat. Add in the matte-black cladding, a wider grille, and standard raised roof rails with integrated crossbars and tie-downs, and the all-new Outback has a no-nonsense vibe. Although the Outback now looks more like a traditional SUV and less like a wagon, it retains the same wheelbase and ground clearance that make it both rugged and practical.
2. Updated Interior

The 2026 redesign brings a much-welcome modernization to the Subaru Outback’s interior. One of the old but new features for this year is physical control knobs and buttons for the climate control system. The knobs and buttons are conveniently located below the new squared-off 12.1-inch infotainment system. Drivers can view loads of additional information on the standard 12.3-inch digital instrument display, including maps. Other nice perks: a bigger cubby for your phone (and other junk), and redesigned cupholders that are a little easier to reach while keeping your eyes on the road.
3. Wilderness Version

Looking for even more adventure? Then you might want to consider the Wilderness trim, built with off-road enthusiasts in mind. This most rugged of Outback models is packed with dynamic off-road features and standout styling. With 9.5 inches of ground clearance, a 20-degree extended approach angle, and all-terrain tires, you can confidently take on challenging trails without compromising on-road comfort. What impressed us most was the 360-degree surround cameras, which enhance the driver’s ability to navigate rough terrain. You can see what’s ahead and below, and better plan your approach. Even the suspension gets a tune-up for 2026, adding electronic dampers that adjust to road or trail conditions for extra stability and comfort.
